Playful Spaces

Artists construct a children's swing at a bus stop. See what happens.

From the artist's statement:

This project is a study into different ways of bringing play back into public space. It focuses on ways of incorporating incidental play in the public realm by not so much as having separate play equipment that dictates the users but by using existing furniture and architectural elements that indicate playful behaviour for all.

High-Jump Practice

Continuing our Olympic theme, watch this young guy jump 5' 6" over a bar in a gym. He doesn't do it in the typical Fosbury flop way, which makes it more impressive.

Human Skateboard

Watch this cool and now-classic commercial for Sneaux Shoes. It features some neat tricks and thankfully no nose-grinds. This is the stop motion video created by PES. (:30)

Scale of the Universe

Here is the classic Powers of 10 video that shows just how big (and just how small) our universe gets. Think about that on your next picnic! (9 min)

Ferrofluid Art

While most visual artists prefer traditional materials such as oil, acrylic, bronze and ceramic, Tokyo-based SACHIKO KODAMA prefers FERROFLUIDS. Composed of magnetic nanoparticles, ferrofluids often contain high levels of iron and, as such, are deeply affected by and responsive to the presence of magnetic fields.
While the NASA-developed ferrofluids are being used increasingly for commercial applications - on everything from compact disks to weight-responsive car suspension systems - Kodama is revolutionary in applying their widely dynamic qualities to the fine arts arena.

Using a computer to manipulate electro-magnetic fields in the sculptures, Kodama coerces her stunning ferrfluid pieces to grow and disintegrate, flower and
shed, and constantly reinvent themselves without the aid of animatronics or video wizardry.
